Minister of Interior Daniel Mitov and Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Ivan Ivanov inspected the national road-safety coordination centre. Mitov stated that the road safety measures bear fruit, while Ivanov reported that 20 critical points on the country's roads have been secured.
According to data quoted by Mitov, there have been fewer fatalities and injuries caused by road accidents in the country so far in 2025 compared to the same time last year.
Ivanov clarified that the monitoring of the average speed will come into force after the vote on the amendments to the Roads Act, but the locations where this will take place are yet to be determined. The Minister reported that thousands of offenders were detected during a test on the Sofia Ring Road. He was confident that the detection of average speed would enforce more discipline on the roads.
Mitov blamed most traffic accidents on an "aggressive minority on the road who do not obey the law". He insisted that drivers representing this group should have their driving licences permanently revoked. The Minister pointed out that some of the goals set by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov are higher road safety and reducing the number of accidents.
Ivanov believes that the ongoing repair works on Trakia Motorway will be done by the end of June. The next repairs are scheduled for September.
The Minister of Regional Development reported: "The task is to compensate for the four-year delay in repairs. The completion of the Hemus Motorway is also a priority. And next week, there is a meeting to look for a solution to the traffic jams in Kresna."
